‘Stranger Things’ is setting a new bar for TV memes
The ’80s homage series “Stranger Things” was a surprise hit on Netflix when its first season aired in 2016. By the time Season 2 dropped Friday, it was clear the buzzy sci-fi show wasn’t such a “strange” phenomenon anymore.
As Variety reports, the series’ second season broke a Twitter record for a streaming show, eliciting more than 3.7 million tweets during its first weekend out.
It also generated its fair share of memes. Here are some of the best that rained down in the Season 2 twitterstorm.
One fan found old photos of stars Winona Ryder and David Harbour and pretended they were Joyce Byers and Jim Hopper, back when they were a high-school couple:
One fan made an entire Twitter account dedicated to Chief Hopper’s brief dancing scene, syncing his dancing to different songs, such as Bon Jovi’s “You Give Love a Bad Name”:
Some fans pointed out throwback references to such classic ’80s movies as “The Goonies,” in which Sean Astin, who plays lovable nerd Bob Newby, also starred:
Others, still, conflated Season 2 plotlines — such as the unlikely teaming of Steve (Joe Keery) and Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) — with those of other classic children’s franchises, such as “The Baby-Sitter’s Club.”
Seriously, a lot of people were delighted by Steve:
Some fans were also tickled by Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) and the different looks she’s sported in Season 1 and Season 2:
Many fans felt protective of Astin’s Bob:
While others worried about Dustin’s luck at dancing:
And some praised Joyce for her creative interior decorating:
“Stranger Things” Season 2 is currently streaming on Netflix.
