Trump wants death penalty for NYC terror suspect
President Trump said that alleged terrorist Sayfullo Saipov “should get the death penalty” in a tweet late Thursday.
Trump made the sentencing suggestion in a tweet that also claimed Saipov was “happy” about killing eight people by driving a truck down a Manhattan bike path Tuesday.
“NYC terrorist was happy as he asked to hang ISIS flag in his hospital room. He killed 8 people, badly injured 12,” Trump tweeted.
“SHOULD GET DEATH PENALTY!”
Some worried that the president’s suggestion of a sentence could jeopardize a possible upcoming federal trial.
“Mr. President, we all know he should get the death penalty. But when you say it, it makes it harder for DOJ to make that happen,” tweeted Andrew C. McCarthy, a former assistant US attorney for the Southern District of New York.
Earlier in the day, Trump appeared to criticize the criminal justice system for not acting fast enough.
“We need quick justice and we need strong justice — much quicker and much stronger than we have right now — because what we have right now is a joke, and it’s a laughingstock,” Trump said at a cabinet meeting.
Shortly after, White House spokesperson Sarah Huckabee Sanders clarified the comments by saying Trump believes the legal process “should move faster” and president was expressing his “frustration” about that with his statement.
